A top South Korean official said his country remains confident there have been no “unusual developments” in North Korea, suggesting that rumors about the possible ill health of leader Kim Jong Un are untrue.

Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul told a closed-door forum in Seoul on Sunday that South Korea has “enough intelligence to confidently say that there are no unusual developments” in rival North Korea that would back up speculation about Kim Jong Un’s health, according to his ministry.
Rumours and speculation over the North Korean leader’s health began after he did notĀ appearĀ at a key state holiday on April 15. He has not been seen in public since.

South Korea media last week reported that Kim may have undergone cardiovascular surgery or was in isolation to avoid exposure to the new coronavirus.
However, they did carry reports that he had sent a message of gratitude to workers building a tourist resort in Wonsan, an area where some South Korean media reports have said Kim may be staying.
“Our government position is firm,” Moon Chung-in, the top foreign policy adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said in comments to news outlets in the United States.
“Kim Jong Un is alive and well”. He has been staying in the Wonsan area since April 13. No suspicious movements have so far been detected.”
Last week China dispatched a team to North Korea including medical experts to advise on Kim Jong Un, according to three people familiar with the situation.
But China’s foreign ministry said Monday(27) it doesn’t have any information to offer about Kim, according to the Reuters news agency.
The comment came from foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang in response to a question about reports that a Chinese delegation had been sent to North Korea. The delegation was said to include medical experts, but it wasn’t clear if they were going to tend to Kim or help the North’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
